Another trope that Mexican Gothic plays with is that of the crumbling family estate. At one point, Noemí's cousin Catalina turns to Noemí and cries out that the walls are speaking to her. Noemí is a savvy knight, Catalina is no damsel, and the castle is knowingly built on brown bodies, while the prince at the end has always been the hideous, ravening dragon and evil queen all at once. This contrast between the two genres makes categorizing Mexican Gothic complicated. It centers on a young woman investigating her cousin's claims that her husband is trying to murder her. The Gothics knew the only thing more full of horrors than the landscape is the human heart, that the human heart is a haunting. A distinctly Gothic novel set in 20 th century Mexico, complete with a sprawling, haunted house shrouded in mists, a feisty female protagonist thrown by fate into the middle of unknowable, and a terrible secret from the past. Alright. For some people, such a locale would seem incompatible with their idea of Mexico. Through the analysis of global and local Gothic topics and themes, they evaluate the reality of a multifaceted territory marked by a shifting colonial and postcolonial relationship with Europe and the United States.
